2023 IMPACT REPORT

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
-Margaret Mead

A Note From our 2023 Executive Director

INTRODUCING BRAD RAY, OUR 2024 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Portrait of Kacy Howard, outgoing Executive Director of the NCF
DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS,

It has been my honor to serve as the Executive Director of Nate Chute Foundation, and I am excited to welcome Brad Ray as NCF’s new Executive Director chosen to lead NCF’s team and propel us to new heights. I am confident that under Brad’s skilled and authentic leadership, NCF  will continue to innovate and transform the landscape of mental health and suicide prevention in our community.

The theme of this year’s annual impact report is “Transformation,” and it truly encapsulates the journey we have undertaken together. In 2023, we implemented new and expanded programming rooted in the latest research on best practices for suicide prevention and mental health. This year, we have particularly focused on amplifying the youth voice and experience in mental health, ensuring that our programs are not only effective but also deeply relevant to those we serve.

Looking ahead, I am filled with excitement about the future of this organization. The dedication and hard work of our staff, board, and supporters have laid a solid foundation upon which we will build even greater impact.

I am deeply grateful for all that has been accomplished thus far and for the unwavering support we receive from each of you. Your belief in our mission fuels our determination for shaping a brighter future for mental health in our community.

Thank you for being a part of this transformative journey.

Best,

DEAR NCF FRIENDS,

One need only look at the pages of this report to see the impact NCF has had on the Flathead County under Kacy’s and the Board’s leadership. The small but mighty team has touched the lives of thousands throughout the community, becoming an invaluable resource to our residents. I’m honored and humbled to be following in Kacy’s footsteps.

As we collectively reflect on the past 25 years since NCF was created, we will use its steady and stable foundation as a jumping point to move the organization forward, increasing services and expanding programs with laser focus. Together, our staff and board and, you, our stakeholders and friends, will someday realize our mission – to support, educate and empower our communities to promote mental wellness and reduce suicide.

Always Forward,

Transforming Curriculum: LEARN

In the summer of 2023, NCF reached out to Forefront Suicide Prevention, a Center of Excellence at the University of Washington that is focused on reducing suicide by empowering individuals and communities to take sustainable action, championing systemic change, and restoring hope. NCF partnered with Forefront to implement their LEARN® training for our general community, including parents and educators.

One unique aspect of LEARN that attracted NCF to this curriculum is Forefront’s emphasis on lethal means safety information. Knowing that reducing or removing access to an individual’s chosen method during a time of crisis can be integral to saving lives, NCF was looking for a curriculum that addressed this while remaining respectful of the gun culture that exists in Montana.  Pre- and post- surveys indicated that after attending a LEARN training from NCF, attendees reported significant improvement in their overall knowledge of, and comfortability with, suicide prevention, with nearly 98% of people stating they could effectively connect someone who is at risk for suicide to help.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Nate Chute Foundation because our organizations’ missions align so well. We are both focused on education and support to the communities we serve, to help them reduce suicide.  We look forward to continuing our partnership to share our message of hope and help more Montanans learn how to prevent suicide in their communities.”
Emma Mallonee, Forefront Deputy Director and Training Director

Transforming our community one business at a time.

“The LEARN training NCF gave to our managers at Whitefish Mountain Resort guided one of those managers to get his employee down to the ER and then into Pathways during a mental crisis.  The manager did all the right things, and we can’t thank you enough for providing us with the words to use, knowledge of questions to ask, and direction not to leave the person during the crisis.”

“We are so happy that you are supporting suicide prevention and are bringing this concern to the light in our community. It is important that people know children do hurt and feel alone, and the fact that you’re making that statement is really inspiring. We hope that this donation helps you continue to pursue making a difference in  young people’s lives. We admire how you continue to be an advocate towards children and better the world around us.”

“The Nate Chute Foundation has drastically impacted the culture at our high school in terms of how we deal with stigmatization around mental health. Being vulnerable as a teenager is one of the most challenging things to do, but by having NCF as a resource and providing presentations, students feel more open with sharing how they’re feeling.”

- Katy Bitney, 2023 Glacier High School Senior

"The Nate Chute Foundation has played a vital part in building our school community, helping to shape student support systems, and always listening to concerns and worries in the mental health sphere. Their engaging presentations and signs of suicide training help students on recognizing the signs of distress and how to seek help.”
