Tips for recognizing Signs of struggle
& starting the conversation

What are some warning signs of suicide?

  • Talking about death or suicide
  • Increased use of drugs, alcohol or other risky behaviors
  • Mood changes, increased agitation, depressed mood
  • Hopelessness, withdrawal from others
  • Saying “goodbye” or putting one’s affairs in order

How to have the conversation:

If you’re worried about someone, assume you are the only one who is going to reach out.
  • Talk to them in private, let them know you care
  • Listen to their story
  • Avoid debating the value of life, minimizing their problems, or giving them advice
  • It’s okay to ask them directly about suicide! (i.e. “Are you thinking of killing yourself?”)
  • Encourage them to seek help or contact their doctor or therapist

coping with suicide loss

When your world has been altered by the loss of a loved one to suicide, it can be difficult to imagine anything beyond tremendous grief.  If you are a new survivor, you may experience a wide range of emotions.  You may feel anxious, angry, or have a tremendous sense of guilt.  You may have difficulty eating, sleeping, or functioning in your daily life.  You may be grieving while caring for children or others who have been impacted by this loss.

THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG WAY TO FEEL.
Know that you are not alone, and that the pain and grief can transform with time.  There are resources and support available to get you through this difficult time.

coping with suicide loss is complicated

Coping with the loss of a loved one by suicide can be extremely difficult as we try to "make sense" of the suicide.  Oftentimes, we are not able to fully understand why the suicide occurred, and we might grapple with the "what ifs" or what could have been done to prevent the suicide.  Know that we all do the best we can with the information we have, when we have it.
IT IS COMMON TO FEEL:
  • Shock
  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Rejection
  • Sadness

  • Denial
  • Confusion
  • Relief
  • Isolation
  • Guilt
  • Shame
  • Irritabiltiy
