SCHOOL & COMMUNITY SUPPORT
In 2011, NCF began supporting the Student Assistance Program (SAP) in the Whitefish School District, while continuing to support the school-based mental health counseling program. As the needs of our students grew, so did our ability to offer additional support and education in classrooms and communities across the Flathead Valley.
NCF offers developmentally appropriate suicide awareness and education presentations to students in health classes with a focus on resilience-building. Topics covered range from discussing the risk- and protective-factors related to suicide, tools to help young people identify healthy networks of support, and the idea that help is available and “it’s okay to not be okay.” To increase support to our schools on a systems-level, it is also a priority to partner with Flathead Valley schools in support of programs unique to their school culture and individual prevention efforts.
We also host community support groups on a variety of related topics. The aim of these groups is to provide a safe space to process experiences with suicide and learn skills to cope with challenges and create healthy habits and to offer resources for prevention.
NCF strives to provide opportunities for suicide prevention awareness and education to educators, wellness professionals, and interested community members. Through workshops, conversations, and training opportunities, we aim to create communities of support where people have the skills and resources they need to help save a life.
